Welcome New Dads
We offer classes for dads-to-be, dads of newborns, and dads of babies up to one year of age!
Becoming a father is a life changing event. New dads experience excitement and face many - often unanticipated - new challenges. Most books, workshops and support groups are geared toward the needs and perspectives of a new mother, so fathers of newborns and toddlers are usually left to navigate this territory without much specific guidance or support. These are classes specifically for dads.
Basic Training for New Dads (BTND) is a San Diego-based class for expectant fathers in which the teachers are fathers with their newborn children. BTND is actually a series of three separate “guy-friendly” classes, each one of which targets the different questions that dads-to-be and new dads tend to have. The classes are “dads-only,” and dads can choose to take part in any or all of them.
Dads can speed up the learning curve by comparing notes with other new fathers and asking questions of the facilitator – a trained therapist who specializes in men’s issues and who has young children. The classes covers specific, hands-on skills like changing a diapers and soothing an infant, as well as guidance for handling some of the less tangible issues such as changing roles, new relationship dynamics, work/family balance and the wide range of challenges a new dad experiences. If you’re a new dad looking for some “brass tacks” pointers from other dads, BTND is for you.
